Many Americans are unaware that it was illegal to own gold in the United States from 1934 to 1974. The US was in the depths of the Great Depression that began in 1929, and the government and banks needed to shore up their financial soundness. Gold was nationalized. Executive Order 6102 was issued on April 5, 1933 under FDR (see newspaper clipping below) and Americans were required to report, then turn in, their gold bullion, certificates, and coins at the price of $20.67 per ounce. Americans were permitted to keep gold jewelry, and no more than $100 worth of gold…

Over the past couple of weeks, we have seen an increased spotlight on Chief Diversity Officers (CDO) and how they are going to improve the lack of inclusion and diversity within their companies. Largely these roles are being filled by PoC, and while I love C-Suite title positions going to PoC, shouldn’t we mean more to a company than just having to focus on tackling decades of racist policies?

Hiring Black and Brown people for PR points and relegating them to these positions seems like a cop out and highlights the persistent issues of racial equity and equality within corporate…

An erotic thriller about nuns searches for salvation beyond mere happiness.

Erotic thrillers about nuns are a rarity outside of exploitation cinema, but Black Narcissus (1947) is exactly such a film. Instead of nudity or explicit sexual content — this isn’t Nude Nuns with Big Guns (2010) — it delivers tortured passions, big ideas and a look at life that’s as disinclined to gloss extreme challenges as it is to surrender to adversity.

Black Narcissus is based on the 1939 novel of the same name by English author Rumer Godden. It’s about nuns who start a convent in the Himalayas but find their environs to be challenging. Directors Michael Powell and…

Canada on Wednesday approved its first Covid-19 vaccine and said initial shots will be delivered and administered across the country starting next week, while every Canadian will be able to be inoculated as early as the end of September.

Canada is the third country after Britain and Bahrain to give the green light to Pfizer Inc’s vaccine, developed with Germany’s BioNTech SE, reports Reuters.

Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in parliament it was “a good day for Canadians”.

“We will see 30,000 vaccines begin to arrive next week with many more on the horizon, but … we’ve got a…

Heart disease now represents 16% of total deaths from all causes

Non-communicable diseases now make up 7 of the world’s top 10 causes of death, according to 2019 Global Health Estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO).

This is an increase from 4 of the 10 leading causes in 2000. The new data, published on Wednesday, cover the period from 2000 to 2019 inclusive.

The estimates reveal trends over the last 2 decades in mortality and morbidity caused by diseases and injuries, said WHO.

Heart disease remains the number 1 killer; diabetes and dementia enter the top 10.

Heart disease…

In a month we will (finally!) say goodbye to the not-so-cool year 2020. Since my previous article about trends was quite successful, I took some time and did some industry research, to create a 2021 Design Trend Guide.

Let’s take a look at what 2021 will bring!

1. 3D Illustrations (yeah, still!)

3D imagery is here to stay — especially when it’s getting easier and easier for regular UI designers to actually create something in 3D! (try the 3D tool called Spline — currently in beta, but so amazing and easy to use!).

3D is also being widely used in full screen animations, as main…

After prototyping and testing a range of new technologies to help tackle food waste and food insecurity, we’re moving to Google to scale up our work

Around the world, 820 million people don’t have access to the food they need, yet one third of the world’s food is wasted. Here in the U.S., the problems are just as stark — 30 to 40 percent of our food supply goes to waste, costing retailers $57 billion annually, while one in eight people in America don’t have enough to eat. This waste isn’t just bad for people and businesses, it’s terrible for…
